COAS Lt Gen Waidi Shiabu Assesses Troop Readiness in Abakaliki, Pledges Enhanced South-East Security

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to bolstering security in the South-East following an operational visit to the Nkwagu Military Cantonment in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.

The visit, conducted on Thursday, July 9, 2026, was aimed at evaluating the troops’ combat readiness, operational effectiveness, and welfare. The exercise aligns with the COAS’s vision of building a professional, adaptive, and resilient force capable of addressing contemporary security challenges through inter-agency collaboration.

Addressing officers and soldiers, Lt. Gen. Shaibu commended their dedication, discipline, and unwavering commitment to duty. He urged the troops to remain vigilant, uphold the Constitution, and maintain the highest standards of professionalism and respect for human rights while sustaining pressure on threats to peace in the region.

The army chief also inspected critical operational and welfare facilities, including the Military Hospital and troops’ accommodation. He reiterated that personnel welfare, healthcare, and infrastructure remain top priorities to drive operational efficiency and mission success.

Earlier, Lt. Gen. Shaibu was briefed on ongoing operations, achievements, and administrative requirements in the zone. Expressing satisfaction with their progress, he encouraged continued synergy with sister services, other security agencies, and host communities to consolidate peace and promote lasting security across Ebonyi State and the wider South-East.
