A new legal action has been filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja to bar former President Goodluck Jonathan from contesting the 2027 presidential election.
The suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2102/2025, was filed by lawyer Johnmary Chukwukasi Jideobi, who is asking the court to issue a perpetual injunction restraining Jonathan from seeking nomination from any political party or participating in the 2027 poll.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) were also listed as co-defendants alongside Jonathan.
The plaintiff wants the court to declare that, under Sections 1 and 137(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), Jonathan is constitutionally ineligible to contest for the presidency again.
He also asked the court to prohibit INEC from accepting or publishing Jonathan’s name as a candidate and to direct the AGF to enforce any resulting court order.
In a supporting affidavit, Emmanuel Agida, who identified himself as an advocate of constitutionalism, argued that allowing Jonathan to run would breach the constitutional two-term limit, effectively enabling him to serve more than the permitted eight years in office.
