The Federal Government says it will review the concessioning of federal roads across the country, amid growing concerns over the condition and performance of some of the roads.
The government also apologised to Nigerians over the poor state of the Benin-Asaba Road, acknowledging the hardship and inconvenience experienced by motorists and commuters using the major route.
The announcement comes as authorities seek to address concerns surrounding the management and maintenance of concessioned roads, particularly those where users have continued to complain about deteriorating road conditions.
The Benin-Asaba Road, a major transport corridor linking Edo and Delta states, has in recent times faced criticism over its condition, with motorists raising concerns about delays, vehicle damage and the impact on economic activities along the route.
The government said it was committed to ensuring that concession arrangements deliver the expected value to Nigerians, stressing the need for greater accountability and effective maintenance of critical road infrastructure.
The planned review is expected to examine existing concession agreements and assess whether concessionaires are meeting their contractual obligations.
The government’s apology over the Benin-Asaba Road is likely to ease some of the concerns raised by commuters, although motorists will be looking for concrete improvements rather than assurances.
Federal authorities say efforts are under way to improve the nation’s road network and ensure that major transport corridors receive the attention required to support economic activity and ease movement across the country.
