Plans for Nigeria’s 2025 Democracy Day celebration have officially kicked off, with the Federal Government inaugurating an inter-ministerial committee to oversee activities marking the national event.
Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), has been appointed as chairman of the planning committee.
Although Akume was not physically present at the inauguration held in Abuja, he was represented by the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu.
Speaking on behalf of the SGF, Bagudu described Democracy Day as “a moment to honour our democratic journey, reflect on national progress, and reaffirm the government’s commitment to constitutional governance.”
He added that the event would also offer the Bola Tinubu-led administration an opportunity to showcase its achievements and reinforce the Renewed Hope Agenda.
“The committee must work hand-in-hand with the administration to project our democratic gains,” Bagudu said. “This celebration is not just ceremonial; it’s a reflection of our enduring commitment to democracy.”
According to a statement issued on Thursday by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information at the SGF’s Office, a series of events have been lined up to commemorate the occasion.
Key activities include a World Press Briefing and Special Juma’at Service on Friday, 6th June; a Church Service on Sunday, 8th June; a Youth Programme on Tuesday, 9th June; a Public Lecture on Wednesday, 11th June; and a Presidential Broadcast and National Parade on Thursday, 12th June.
The committee includes prominent government officials such as the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun; Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris; Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar; FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike; and the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
Also appointed are Hadiza Bala-Usman, Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination; Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun; DSS Director-General, Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi; Guards Brigade Commander, Brigadier General Adebisi Onasanya; and several permanent secretaries across key ministries.
Engr. Nadungu Gagare, Permanent Secretary of the Political and Economic Affairs Office in the SGF’s Office, will serve as Member and Secretary of the committee.
The 2025 Democracy Day marks yet another opportunity for reflection, celebration, and recommitment to the values of participatory governance.
The Federal Government has urged citizens to engage with the process and observe the scheduled activities with national pride.
