The Federal Government has set a 24-month deadline to complete the reconstruction of the National Library headquarters complex in Abuja, with the project estimated to cost ₦155 billion.

The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, announced the deadline on Thursday during a familiarisation visit to the construction site.

Alausa said the government was committed to ensuring the timely completion of the project, which is expected to provide a modern facility for the country’s national library services.

The reconstruction of the complex is part of efforts to improve Nigeria’s educational infrastructure and strengthen access to information and research resources.

The minister’s announcement comes amid growing expectations over the completion of the long-delayed national library project, which is considered an important institution for preserving the country’s literary and documentary heritage.

When completed, the facility is expected to provide improved infrastructure for researchers, students, academics and members of the public.

The 24-month timeline means the government is targeting completion within two years, although the minister’s announcement did not provide further details on the project’s implementation milestones.

The National Library of Nigeria serves as the country’s principal repository of published materials and plays a key role in preserving its intellectual and cultural heritage.
