Fresh controversy is brewing over the promotion of senior police officers in Nigeria after Femi Gbajabiamila, chief of staff to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, reportedly asked the Police Service Commission (PSC) to grant special promotion to eight police officers attached to politicians.

According to reports, the requests were conveyed in two separate letters sent to the commission, raising questions over the legality and propriety of such intervention in police affairs.

Under the PSC Act, the authority to appoint and promote police officers rests solely with the commission, a provision designed to shield the process from political influence and preserve institutional independence.

The reported request has sparked legal and ethical concerns among observers, with critics warning that political interference in security agencies could undermine transparency and professionalism within the police force.

The identities of the affected officers and the politicians they are attached to were not immediately disclosed. However, the development is expected to intensify debate over the growing intersection between politics and policing in Nigeria.

The matter also places renewed scrutiny on the role of the Police Service Commission in maintaining merit-based promotions amid mounting pressure from influential political actors.
