Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has issued a strong warning against the push for former President Goodluck Jonathan’s return to power in 2027, claiming that such a move could lead to national instability. Speaking on Channels TV’s Politics Today programme,

Wike argued that the political plot to endorse Jonathan for another term is driven by ulterior motives, which could plunge the country into crisis.

“Anybody saying Jonathan should return because he will only do one term is only looking for a crisis,” Wike remarked, emphasizing that the same individuals who now advocate for Jonathan’s return had previously worked to undermine his 2015 re-election bid.

He accused these individuals of being hypocritical, stating, “Jonathan has made a name for himself globally, and they just want to drag him into unnecessary conflict.”

The Minister also criticized the agenda behind promoting southern candidates under the guise of a “one-term presidency,” describing it as disingenuous and harmful to the political stability of Nigeria. “It is destabilizing and dishonest,” he added.

While acknowledging the economic struggles currently facing Nigerians under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, Wike emphasized the government’s ongoing efforts to reposition the economy.

“Yes, there is hardship. I agree. But no one can deny that this government is making efforts to improve things. I see the projects in Abuja daily; they are evidence that something is happening,” he said.

In a direct response to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s recent comments warning of a possible revolution due to hunger and poverty, Wike dismissed Atiku’s rhetoric as hypocritical.

“Atiku was vice president for eight years. Why didn’t he lay the foundation to prevent hunger then? Now he keeps talking about hunger and revolution. For me, I don’t even bother reading what he says because there is no truth in it,” Wike asserted.

He urged Nigerians to show patience with the current administration and rejected opposition attempts to exploit economic difficulties for political gain. “We must not allow them to take advantage of our challenges for selfish political motives,” Wike concluded.
