The House of Representatives on Tuesday withdrew its self-sponsored constitutional amendment bill seeking to establish state police, opting instead to fast-track an Executive-sponsored version of the bill transmitted by President Bola Tinubu.
The decision was reached during Tuesday’s plenary session, where lawmakers immediately passed the newly received Executive bill through its first and second readings.
Following the accelerated readings, the bill was referred to the House Committee on Constitutional Review for further legislative action.
The move effectively suspends the Green Chamber’s independent legislative efforts on state policing, aligning the house’s focus with the presidency’s specific proposals on decentralizing Nigeria’s security architecture.
The Executive bill is expected to undergo intense scrutiny at the committee stage, where lawmakers will debate its framework and operational guidelines before returning it to the floor for final passage.
