The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed that its investigation into alleged corruption involving former Delta State governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, remains ongoing. The agency dismissed claims that Okowa is being protected following his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede made the clarification during a press briefing at the commission’s headquarters to mark his second year in office.

Speaking through Sylvanus Tahir, the EFCC’s Director of Legal and Prosecution and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Olukoyede rejected suggestions of political interference, stressing that the commission operates independently.

“Someone asked whether politicians who switch to the ruling party are shielded. The simple answer is no,” he said.

“I believe the reference was to the case of a former Delta State governor. To the best of my knowledge, that case is still under investigation, and justice will be served in due course.

“We’ve seen situations where cases were rushed to court with poor outcomes. We intend to conduct a thorough investigation, and when we go to court, Nigerians will see the full picture.

“There is absolutely no attempt to protect anyone because of political affiliations—not under this chairman,” Olukoyede added.
