Nigeria’s National Union of Edible Oil Tanker Drivers (NUEOTDN) has suspended its planned nationwide strike following interventions by the federal government and the Department of State Services (DSS).
The union’s president, Ilias Aperun, announced the suspension in a statement issued on Tuesday in Lagos.
NUEOTDN had threatened industrial action over concerns affecting the operations and welfare of edible oil tanker drivers, raising fears of possible disruption to the distribution of cooking oil and other essential commodities.
However, the union said discussions with representatives of the federal government and the DSS had produced enough progress to warrant suspending the planned action.
Mr Aperun said the union would continue to engage the relevant authorities towards resolving the issues that prompted the proposed strike.
The suspension is expected to avert a disruption in the transportation and distribution of edible oil across the country.
Further action by the union will depend on the outcome of ongoing discussions with the government.
