Nigeria’s secret police, the Department of State Services (DSS), has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to social media giant X (formerly Twitter), demanding the removal of a post by activist Omoyele Sowore or risk legal action.
In a letter signed by B. Bamigboye on behalf of the DSS Director-General, and addressed to X Corp’s Chairman and CEO, the agency insisted that Sowore’s 25 August 2025 post be taken down without delay.
The post, published via Sowore’s verified handle, accused President Bola Tinubu of lying during an official visit to Brazil when he claimed his administration was free of corruption.
The DSS described the remarks as “misleading, incendiary and a threat to national security”, arguing that the content amounted to hate speech, incitement to violence, and a breach of Nigerian laws including the Criminal Code Act and the 2025 Cyber Crimes Act.
According to the agency, Sowore’s post was a calculated attempt to damage both the President’s reputation and Nigeria’s image abroad, while potentially stirring unrest among Tinubu’s supporters.
