The State Security Service (SSS) has arraigned a suspect in court over the alleged attack on Don Pedro Obaseki, in a case that has sparked renewed concerns about public safety and politically motivated violence.
The suspect was brought before a magistrate’s court on Friday, facing multiple charges including conspiracy, assault and conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace.
According to prosecutors, the incident occurred during a public engagement where Mr Obaseki was reportedly accosted by the accused and others still at large. The SSS told the court that swift intelligence-led operations led to the arrest of the suspect, adding that investigations are ongoing to identify additional collaborators.
Counsel to the SSS said the alleged attack was not only an offence against an individual but a threat to public order, urging the court to deny bail to prevent interference with investigations.
The defence, however, pleaded for bail, arguing that the accused is innocent until proven guilty and would be available for trial.
The presiding magistrate adjourned the matter to a later date to rule on the bail application and ordered that the suspect be remanded in custody pending further proceedings.
Security sources say the SSS has intensified surveillance and preventive measures, assuring the public of its commitment to safeguarding lives and property.
The case is expected to resume in the coming days.
