Vice-President Kashim Shettima arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 27 July 2025 to attend the second United Nations Food Systems Summit, scheduled from 27 to 29 July. The summit aims to convene global leaders to review progress since the inaugural 2021 UN Food Systems Summit and to advance commitments towards resilient, inclusive, and sustainable food systems.
The Vice-President’s aircraft landed at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport at approximately 16:26 local time. He was welcomed by Ethiopia’s Deputy Prime Minister, Temesgen Tiruneh, alongside Nigeria’s Chargé d’Affaires in Ethiopia, Ambassador Nasir Aminu, and other senior embassy officials, including Deputy Head of Mission Ambassador Macy Ogbede, Finance Attaché Dr Suleiman Dauda, and Deputy Defence Attaché (Air Force) Wing Commander Gabriel Batubo.
Upon arrival, Vice-President Shettima received a briefing on the summit’s agenda from Ambassador Aminu and Marion Moon, Technical Assistant to the President on Agriculture and Executive Secretary of the Presidential Food Systems Coordinating Unit (PFSCU). During the summit, the Vice-President will engage in high-level discussions, including sessions focused on transforming the coffee value chain and other roundtables aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s food security initiatives.
In addition to the main summit, Vice-President Shettima will participate in side events designed to showcase successful examples of food systems transformation, foster knowledge exchange, and promote international partnerships. The summit builds on the momentum of the 2021 UN Food Systems Summit and the 2023 Stocktake (UNFSS+2), with a focus on accelerating sustainable and inclusive food systems, particularly in fragile and conflict-affected regions.
The event will also contribute to shaping a unified global narrative on sustainable development, fostering synergies with key Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) transitions.
