Africa’s richest businessman, Aliko Dangote, has said the Dangote Petroleum Refinery is expected to consume about 2.5% of all globally traded crude oil when it reaches full operational capacity.
Mr Dangote, who is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the refinery, said the development underscores the scale of the facility and its growing significance in the global energy market.
According to him, the 650,000-barrels-per-day refinery has been designed to process massive volumes of crude oil, positioning Nigeria as a major refining hub while reducing the country’s dependence on imported petroleum products.
He noted that operating at full capacity would require a substantial and consistent supply of crude, making the refinery one of the largest single consumers of globally traded crude oil.
The Dangote Refinery, located in Lagos, is regarded as the largest single-train refinery in the world and is expected to transform Nigeria’s downstream oil sector by boosting local refining, creating jobs, strengthening energy security and generating foreign exchange through the export of refined petroleum products.
Industry observers say the refinery’s projected crude demand highlights its strategic importance not only to Nigeria’s economy but also to the international oil market, where its operations are expected to influence regional fuel supply and global crude trading patterns.
