A Federal High Court in Abuja has postponed proceedings in a case seeking the deregistration of several political parties, pushing the hearing to May 5.

The suit, filed by the National Forum of Former Legislators (NFFL), is asking the court to compel Nigeria’s electoral authorities to strike out the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Accord Party, Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), and Action Alliance (AA) from the list of registered parties.

At the heart of the legal challenge is an alleged violation of Section 225 of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution, which outlines the financial and operational requirements political parties must meet to remain registered.

The court did not immediately provide detailed reasons for the adjournment. However, the delay prolongs uncertainty for the affected parties as the case tests the enforcement of constitutional provisions governing Nigeria’s multi-party system.

The matter is expected to resume on May 5, when arguments are likely to focus on whether the parties in question have failed to meet statutory obligations required for their continued existence.
