Firebrand activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has sparked fresh political debate by claiming that Abia State Governor Alex Otti is politically closer to President Bola Tinubu than any sitting governor of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Sowore made the remark while reacting to recent developments in Nigeria’s opposition politics, suggesting that despite Otti being a member of the opposition Labour Party, his relationship with the president surpasses that of many APC state governors.

The comment comes amid growing speculation about political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections. Sowore, who has been vocal in criticising both the Tinubu administration and some opposition figures, appeared to highlight what he sees as an unusually warm rapport between the Abia governor and the presidency.

Analysts say the statement reflects the fluid nature of Nigerian politics, where personal and strategic ties often cut across party lines. Otti, widely praised for infrastructure improvements in Abia State since taking office in 2023, has maintained a relatively independent stance while occasionally facing accusations of being soft on the federal government.

Sowore, leader of the African Action Congress (AAC), has in recent weeks intensified scrutiny of Otti’s performance, even while acknowledging their personal friendship. He previously warned the governor that he would criticise any perceived mediocrity in office.

Neither Governor Otti nor the presidency has responded directly to Sowore’s latest claim. APC officials have also remained silent on the assertion that Otti enjoys a closer relationship with Tinubu than their own governors.

The remark has ignited heated discussions on social media, with supporters of Otti defending his developmental record and critics questioning the implications for opposition unity against the ruling APC ahead of future elections.
