The outgoing Chairman of Bwari Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory, John Gabaya, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress.

Gabaya announced his defection in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja and signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Ernest Agada.

He said the decision was aimed at strengthening development efforts in the council through closer collaboration with the Federal Government.

The chairman added that the move was also part of ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“I have wholeheartedly embraced the APC as a platform for advancing peace, unity, and development in Bwari Area Council, Abuja,” Gabaya said.

“It is for better collaborations with the Federal Government, to ensure long-term council development, and this was followed by extensive consultations with stakeholders.”

Gabaya, who was elected on the PDP platform in 2019, is expected to complete his second tenure in June. He is currently seeking to contest the House of Representatives seat for the AMAC/Bwari constituency in the 2027 polls.

He explained that his decision followed prayers and wide consultations, noting that it also complied with constitutional provisions guiding political parties.

The council chairman expressed gratitude to supporters who backed his emergence while in the PDP, stressing that his defection should not be seen as hostility towards former party members.

Gabaya also expressed optimism about the forthcoming elections, praying for peaceful and credible polls nationwide.

He further assured that Bwari Area Council would deliver strong support for President Bola Tinubu in the next election cycle.
