President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has inaugurated a Presidential Working Group tasked with developing the legal and constitutional framework required for the establishment of state police, marking a significant step towards one of the country’s most debated security reforms.
The committee has been mandated to review existing constitutional provisions, propose necessary legislative amendments and design a comprehensive legal structure that would enable individual states to establish and operate their own police services while maintaining coordination with federal security institutions.
The move comes amid growing calls from state governments, security experts and civil society groups for a decentralised policing system to address rising insecurity, banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes across Nigeria.
The establishment of the working group signals the Tinubu administration’s determination to advance constitutional reforms aimed at strengthening internal security and granting states a more active role in safeguarding lives and property.
Further details regarding the committee’s membership, timeline and recommendations are expected to be released by the Presidency.
