Musa calls for stronger community involvement, effective governance and improved national identification systems in the fight against insecurity

Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar Musa, has said that defeating terrorism and other security threats requires a comprehensive approach that goes beyond military operations, stressing the need for stronger community participation, improved governance and reliable national identification systems.

Musa said security forces alone cannot win the battle against terrorism without the active support of citizens and institutions working together to address the root causes of insecurity.

The minister emphasised that while military action remains critical in confronting armed groups, lasting peace can only be achieved through a combination of intelligence-driven operations, community cooperation and policies that strengthen trust between the government and the people.

“Countering terrorism requires a whole-of-society approach,” Musa said, highlighting the importance of communities providing timely information to security agencies and supporting efforts aimed at preventing violent extremism.

He also pointed to the need for stronger governance structures, arguing that effective public institutions and improved service delivery are essential in reducing vulnerabilities that extremist groups often exploit.

Musa further called for the development of robust national identification systems, describing accurate population data as a vital tool for tracking threats, improving intelligence gathering and enhancing national security planning.

His remarks come as Nigeria continues to battle multiple security challenges, including insurgency, banditry and organised criminal activities across several regions.

Security experts have long argued that a combination of military strength, social interventions, economic opportunities and effective governance is necessary to address the country’s complex security landscape.

The Defence Minister said sustained collaboration among government agencies, security forces, local communities and citizens remains key to achieving a safer Nigeria.
