President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has dissolved the Presidential Implementation Committee (PIC) on the Alienation of Federal Government Properties, bringing an end to the body’s mandate of overseeing the sale, lease and management of federal landed assets.
The decision was announced on Thursday in a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, who said all matters previously handled by the committee would now be coordinated by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN.
The PIC was established in 2000 by former President Olusegun Obasanjo as part of the Federal Government’s monetisation policy, with the responsibility of managing the alienation of government properties through privatisation, sale and lease arrangements.
The committee was made up of representatives from key government institutions, including the ministries of Housing, Transportation, Justice, Health and Agriculture, as well as the Nigeria Police Force. Its pioneer secretary was Professor P.T. Ahire, then a Deputy Director in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
In 2001, the Federal Executive Council approved the establishment of a Panel of Inquiry to review the committee’s recommendations and develop a White Paper to guide their implementation. The panel conducted its work for 21 months before submitting its report.
However, the Federal Government said the activities of the committee had expanded beyond its original mandate, resulting in several legal disputes and litigations across the country.
According to the Presidency, the continued existence of the PIC was no longer necessary, prompting President Tinubu to approve its dissolution and transfer responsibility for related matters to the Attorney General of the Federation.
The directive, which took effect on November 5, 2025, also ordered the former Secretary of the committee, B.S. Dutsin-Ma, to immediately stop representing the dissolved body or acting on behalf of the Federal Government on matters connected to its operations.
The Presidency said the move was part of ongoing efforts to streamline government processes, strengthen accountability and ensure effective management of federal assets.
