Nigeria and Canada have intensified discussions aimed at establishing direct air connectivity between both countries, with negotiations on a Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) nearing conclusion.
The proposed agreement is expected to pave the way for direct flight operations between the two nations, a move officials say will strengthen economic ties, boost tourism, and create easier travel opportunities for citizens of both countries.
The BASA framework is designed to provide the legal and regulatory foundation for airlines from Nigeria and Canada to operate scheduled flights between the two destinations.
A successful conclusion of the negotiations would mark a significant milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to expand its international aviation network and improve connectivity with key global partners.
Aviation experts say the introduction of direct flights could reduce travel time, lower costs associated with connecting flights, and encourage greater movement of business travellers, students, tourists and families between the two countries.
Nigeria and Canada maintain strong diplomatic and economic relations, with thousands of Nigerians living, studying and working in Canada. Officials believe improved air links will further deepen cooperation in trade, education, investment and cultural exchange.
