Senator Ahmed Wadada Aliyu, representing Nasarawa West in the Nigerian Senate, has officially resigned from the Social Democratic Party (SDP), citing deepening internal crises and ongoing litigations within the party.

The resignation was contained in a letter dated August 20, 2025, and addressed to the SDP Ward Chairman in Tudun Kofa, Keffi Local Government Area, Nasarawa State.

“This decision has not been taken lightly,” Wadada wrote. “But I feel compelled to do so due to the lingering internal crisis that has plagued our party for some time.”

The lawmaker, who has served as one of the party’s most prominent figures in the National Assembly, expressed gratitude for his time with the SDP but said it was time to “move on and explore new avenues.”

Political Signals and Future Ambitions

Wadada’s exit had been widely anticipated. In June, he publicly criticized former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, accusing him of lacking political principles — a swipe many interpreted as a prelude to his defection.

“Even though Malam El-Rufai is my elder brother, I don’t think I can stay with him in the SDP because he is not a principled politician,” Wadada said at the time.

The senator is widely believed to be positioning himself for a run in the 2027 Nasarawa State governorship race — a move that may now accelerate following his departure from the SDP.

While Wadada has yet to formally declare his next political move, sources close to the senator suggest he is already in talks with two major parties ahead of the 2027 election cycle.
