Former Vice President and 2023 PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has emphasised that his priority is a stronger Nigeria rather than the presidency itself. Addressing new defectors at an African Democratic Congress (ADC) ceremony in Lagos, he reiterated, “It’s not about him being the president. It’s about having a better government that will deliver for Nigerians.”
Represented by Prof. Ola Olateju of Achievers University, Atiku conveyed his vision for ADC as a movement committed to national progress. Olateju said, “ADC is not a political party. It is a movement, a movement of Nigerians for a better Nigeria.”
Highlighting the urgency of change, Atiku acknowledged the country’s struggles with inflation and the removal of fuel subsidies. He stated, “We need a new beginning in Nigeria… The must is for him to see Nigeria deliver as wished by all.”
Regarding the 2027 presidential race, Atiku welcomed a democratic selection process within ADC, stressing unity around whoever emerges. “Everybody has a right to contest; we are going to rally round anyone that emerges. The point is a better Nigeria, not Atiku for president at all costs,” he said.
At the event, several prominent defectors from PDP and LP joined ADC, signaling growing momentum for the movement’s goal of national repositioning under new leadership.Atiku Abubakar: Focused on a Better Nigeria, Not Presidency Desperation
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has made it clear that his priority is a stronger and more prosperous Nigeria rather than clinging to the presidency. Speaking at a ceremony for new defectors to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Lagos, Abubakar’s representative, Prof. Ola Olateju, explained, “It’s not about him being the president. It’s about having a better government that will be able to deliver for Nigerians.”
Abubakar, who recently left the PDP to join ADC alongside other opposition figures, describes ADC as more than a political party—a movement for national renewal. Olateju emphasised, “ADC is a movement of Nigerians for a better Nigeria… It’s no longer politics as usual. It’s a new beginning.”
Acknowledging the economic challenges Nigerians face, including inflation and fuel subsidy removal, he said, “The must is for him to see Nigeria deliver as wished by all. We want Nigeria to take care of Nigerians.” On the 2027 presidential ticket, Abubakar stressed the importance of democratic selection within ADC: “Everybody has a right to contest; we are going to rally round anyone that emerges. It’s not Atiku for president at all costs… Whoever picks the ticket shall represent the collective voice and aspiration of Nigeria.”
