Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has adopted a direct primary system for the selection of its presidential candidate, a move expected to shape internal power dynamics ahead of the next general election.
The decision was reached by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), signalling a preference for a process that allows registered party members across the country to participate directly in choosing the flagbearer.
Political observers say the adoption of direct primaries could broaden participation within the party while also intensifying competition among aspirants seeking nationwide grassroots support.
The method has previously sparked debate within Nigeria’s political landscape, with supporters arguing it strengthens internal democracy, while critics warn it may increase logistical challenges and deepen factional tensions.
The APC’s latest move comes as political parties begin strategic positioning ahead of another closely watched presidential contest in Africa’s most populous nation.
