••Namadi Faults Danjuma’s Self-Defense Call, Citing Risk of Lawlessness, Backs State Police.

Jigawa State Governor, Umar Namadi, has strongly cautioned against the recent call by former Chief of Army Staff, General Theophilus Danjuma, urging Nigerians to take up self-defense amidst escalating insecurity.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Monday, Governor Namadi expressed deep concern that such pronouncements could precipitate widespread lawlessness across the nation.
“He (Danjuma) is a very senior security person, and should be respected. But if he says that citizens should be allowed to defend themselves, I think you are causing anarchy,” Governor Namadi stated emphatically. “His words need to be analysed carefully.”
The Governor emphasized the ongoing and concerted efforts of the government to fortify the country’s security infrastructure. He highlighted Jigawa State as a compelling example of how proactive community engagement and well-defined strategic planning can effectively mitigate violence and enhance security.
“When we assumed office, we employed a lot of strategies and brought in experts. We also engaged traditional rulers and established standing committees to communicate with the people. Now, they understand that fighting or killing each other is not the solution,” Governor Namadi explained, underscoring the success of their localized approach. “We have not reached the level where people need to defend themselves.”
Further addressing the nation’s security challenges, Governor Namadi voiced his strong support for the establishment of State Police, characterizing it as a potentially transformative solution to Nigeria’s persistent security problems.
“The idea of State Police is still very much alive. Many states have indicated interest. At the level of the National Economic Council, discussions are ongoing, and I believe it will eventually be implemented,” he affirmed.
General Danjuma’s controversial remarks were made during a public event in Takum, Taraba State, on Saturday. He urged Nigerians to actively defend themselves against the growing menace of bandits and criminals, asserting that relying solely on the government for protection is no longer a viable option.
“The warning I gave some years ago is still as valid today as it was then. Nigerians must rise and defend themselves,” General Danjuma declared, referencing his previous warnings on the security situation. “We cannot continue to sit and watch while bandits, terrorists, and criminal gangs massacre our people unchecked.”
