Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has authorised a groundbreaking initiative to enrol all inmates in the state’s correctional facilities into a free health insurance scheme, ensuring comprehensive healthcare access for all.

Dr Razaq Akindele, Executive Secretary of the Osun State Health Insurance Agency (OSHIA), announced the decision during a press briefing in Osogbo on Tuesday. He revealed that the move was spurred by a compelling appeal from the Controller of Corrections, Rotimi Oluwadele, during a courtesy visit to the Governor.

The scheme covers every inmate, regardless of status—whether convicted, awaiting trial, or serving life sentences—and includes the full spectrum of healthcare services provided by OSHIA. Dr Akindele emphasised that the initiative reflects Governor Adeleke’s commitment to the welfare of all Osun residents, including those in custody, who will eventually reintegrate into society.

“This compassionate decision underscores the Governor’s dedication to the health and rehabilitation of inmates, free from any political motives,” Dr Akindele stated. “It also highlights Osun State’s readiness to collaborate with federal and international partners for the benefit of our people.”

He urged inmates to honour this gesture by adhering to correctional facility regulations and expressed hope for their swift reintegration into society with sound health and mind.
