The leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and former Kano State governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has strongly condemned the defection of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf from the party, describing the move as a “monumental betrayal” and an unforgivable act of disloyalty.
In his first public reaction since Governor Yusuf’s exit, Kwankwaso said the decision came as a deep personal shock, stressing that it was an action he never expected from a political ally he had trusted and supported.
“This is not just a political decision; it is a betrayal that hurts deeply,” Kwankwaso said. “I never imagined that Abba would take this path, given our shared history and the sacrifices made to build the NNPP in Kano and beyond.”
Kwankwaso also dismissed suggestions that Yusuf’s departure could weaken the NNPP or the Kwankwasiyya movement, insisting that the party’s grassroots support in Kano State remains solid. According to him, the movement transcends individual ambitions and is firmly rooted in the people.
“The Kwankwasiyya movement is bigger than any single person,” he declared. “Kano remains with the NNPP, and no amount of political manoeuvring will change that reality.”
Issuing a stern warning, the former presidential candidate said Governor Yusuf would come to regret his decision to leave the party, arguing that political loyalty and consistency remain critical to sustaining public trust.
Governor Yusuf’s defection has triggered intense political debate in Kano and at the national level, with analysts predicting a possible realignment of political forces ahead of future elections. As the situation unfolds, attention will remain on how the NNPP reorganises its leadership and strategy in its strongest stronghold.
