The Presidency has set a seven-week deadline for the completion of the proposed executive bill on state policing, with the draft expected to be submitted to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for review on September 3, 2026.
The announcement was made on Monday by Femi Gbajabiamila, who disclosed that the committee is working within a fixed timeline to deliver the landmark legislation.
Gbajabiamila, who chairs the Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill, said the executive bill is intended to provide the legal framework for the establishment and operation of state police across Nigeria, a proposal widely regarded as one of the country’s most significant security reforms in recent years.
The move signals renewed momentum by the Federal Government to advance constitutional and legislative reforms aimed at strengthening internal security and improving policing at the sub-national level.
If approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and subsequently transmitted to the National Assembly, the bill is expected to ignite fresh legislative debate over the structure, oversight and implementation of state policing in Nigeria.
The proposed legislation comes amid growing calls from stakeholders for a decentralised policing system to address rising security challenges and improve community-based law enforcement across the federation.
