The Senate Deputy Minority Whip, Senator Rufai Hanga, has resigned his membership of the opposition Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Hanga, who represents Kano Central Senatorial District, announced his decision in a resignation letter dated August 3, 2026. The letter was addressed to the NDC Ward Chairman in Dakata Ward, Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State.
According to the lawmaker, the resignation takes immediate effect.
“After careful reflection and personal deliberation, I have decided to withdraw my membership from the party to pursue other personal commitments and career paths,” Hanga stated in the letter.
Despite his exit, the senator expressed gratitude to the leadership and members of the party in his ward for their support during his tenure.
“I want to express my sincere gratitude to you, the Ward Executive Committee, and the entire membership of Dakata Ward for the opportunities, support, and fellowship I enjoyed during my time with the party,” he wrote. “I cherish the relationships built and the experiences shared.”
Hanga also returned his official NDC membership card alongside the letter, requesting that his name be formally struck off the party’s register at the ward level.
While the lawmaker did not state his next political destination or whether he intends to defect to another party, his sudden exit has fueled speculation about potential political realignments in Kano State ahead of future elections.
