Nigeria’s Ministry of Defence says it is considering a landmark initiative that would allow journalists to accompany troops during selected military operations, in a move aimed at boosting transparency and providing firsthand reporting from the front lines.

The proposal, which is still under consideration, would see accredited journalists embedded with military personnel during carefully selected operations, subject to operational and security requirements.

If approved, the initiative is expected to strengthen public understanding of the military’s counter-insurgency and internal security efforts by offering reporters direct access to ongoing operations while ensuring that sensitive information and the safety of personnel are protected.

Defence authorities say further details on the proposed framework, including eligibility, operational guidelines and implementation timelines, will be announced in due course.
