Nigeria’s Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that he will only support a political candidate who can safeguard his interests and remain loyal, insisting he will not back anyone likely to “betray” him.
Speaking during an interview referenced in a Daily Post report published on Sunday, Wike said political alliances must be built on trust, adding that he has learnt from past experiences.
“I’ll select a candidate who will protect my interests, not someone who will betray me,” he said, stressing that loyalty remains a key condition for anyone seeking his support ahead of future political contests.
The former Rivers State governor, known for his strong political influence and outspoken style, noted that politicians must choose allies carefully to avoid what he described as “avoidable disappointments”.
Wike did not mention any specific office or election, but his statement comes amid increasing speculation about political realignments ahead of Nigeria’s next electoral cycle.
He also underscored that his stance is not unusual in politics, arguing that all political leaders look out for individuals who can maintain alliances and honour agreements.
While critics have accused him of prioritising personal loyalty over broader political ideals, Wike has repeatedly maintained that trust is the bedrock of effective political partnerships.
The remarks have once again placed him at the centre of Nigeria’s evolving political conversations, as analysts continue to watch how his influence shapes alignments within the ruling and opposition blocs.
