The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has explained the reasons behind its recent visit to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, describing the engagement as part of wider consultations aimed at repositioning the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking after the visit, PDP leaders said the meeting with Mr Obasanjo, a founding member and former leader of the party, was driven by the need to draw from his wealth of experience in governance and party organisation. They noted that the former president remains a respected statesman whose counsel is critical at a time when the party is undertaking internal reforms.
According to the party, discussions centred on national unity, democratic consolidation and strategies to strengthen the PDP as a viable alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The delegation said Mr Obasanjo offered frank advice on resolving internal disputes and rebuilding public trust.
The PDP leadership stressed that the visit was not about seeking endorsements but about engaging key stakeholders committed to Nigeria’s democratic development. It added that similar consultations would continue across the country in the coming months.
Reaffirming its ambition to reclaim power, the party declared that it is laying a solid foundation to return to government in 2027. It pledged to present credible candidates and people-focused policies capable of addressing the country’s economic and security challenges.
“The PDP is determined to correct its past mistakes, unite its ranks and offer Nigerians a clear alternative in 2027,” a party official said.
Mr Obasanjo, who has often spoken on national issues since leaving office, has repeatedly called on political parties to put national interest above personal ambition and work towards strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
The PDP said it remains confident that with unity, strategic planning and engagement with elder statesmen, it can regain the confidence of voters and return to power at the next general election.
