Former Sokoto State Governor and ex-Senate President, Aminu Tambuwal, has dismissed claims of a Northern conspiracy against President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general election, insisting that any change of government will come through the ballot box.

Tambuwal, a leading figure in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said there was no coordinated agenda by Northern politicians to undermine the Tinubu administration. He described such narratives as diversionary and urged the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to focus on governance and addressing the country’s mounting challenges.

Speaking on the state of national politics, Tambuwal maintained that Nigerians are increasingly disillusioned with the APC’s performance and would democratically remove the party from power in 2027 if current conditions persist. He stressed that the opposition’s objective is not rooted in regional sentiment but in offering an alternative that responds to economic hardship, insecurity and declining public confidence.

“The next election will not be about North or South,” he said, adding that it would be a referendum on competence, accountability and leadership. According to him, democracy provides the only legitimate pathway for political change, and the opposition is committed to pursuing power through peaceful and constitutional means.

Tambuwal also called for unity across regional and religious lines, warning that framing political competition as a sectional battle risks deepening divisions and undermining national cohesion.

As political manoeuvring intensifies ahead of 2027, his remarks signal a push by the opposition to counter allegations of regional plotting while positioning the APC’s record as the central issue voters will judge at the polls.
