The Legal Assistance and Citizens Rights Initiative (LACRI) has condemned the brutal assault on Miss Jennifer Edema Elohor, a serving National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member in Anambra State.
Elohor was reportedly beaten, stripped naked, and left bloodied by members of the Agunechemba Vigilante Group, a security outfit said to be operating under the authority of Governor Charles Soludo’s administration.
In a statement on Tuesday, LACRI’s Executive Director, Martin Atojoko, described the attack as “barbaric, inhumane, and degrading.”
He called for an immediate investigation into the conduct of the vigilante members and insisted on a public apology and compensation for Elohor.
Atojoko demanded the prosecution of those responsible, regardless of their position or political influence.
“This act represents a grave violation of her fundamental human rights as enshrined in Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution, the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,” he said.
The rights group further urged Governor Soludo, the Inspector General of Police, the National Human Rights Commission, and the NYSC Directorate to act swiftly.
It warned that silence or delay would only embolden further abuse and lawlessness across Anambra State.
“Urgent reform or disbandment of vigilante groups operating outside the rule of law is necessary,” LACRI added.
The organisation expressed solidarity with Elohor and other Nigerians who continue to suffer injustice, abuse, and oppression, stressing that jungle justice has no place in a democracy.
