Dr Ajibola Bashiru, National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former senator, has cautioned that Nigeria’s adoption of electronic voting (e-voting) faces significant delays due to technological barriers and the need for prudent implementation. Speaking at the 12th Prof. Adetokunbo Babatunde Sofoluwe Memorial Anniversary in Lagos, hosted by the UNILAG Alumni Lagos State Branch, Bashiru delivered a lecture titled “Tech Governance in 2025: Balancing Innovation with Responsibility.”
Bashiru stressed that while e-voting could enhance Nigeria’s electoral process, challenges like unreliable power, limited internet access, and cybercrime risks demand a cautious, gradual approach. “No country conducts elections entirely electronically,” he noted, citing manual elements in the recent U.S. election. He warned that software vulnerabilities could also enable manipulation, though he encouraged efforts to address these issues. The APC, he added, is already exploring e-registration for members.
UNILAG Vice-Chancellor Prof. Folasade Ogunsola praised technology’s role in education but urged institutions to ensure students genuinely learn, not just exploit digital tools. She thanked the alumni for their support, vital for the university’s growth.
Hon. Owoeye Adedeji, Chairman of the UNILAG Alumni Lagos Branch, said the event honoured the legacy of the late Prof. Sofoluwe, UNILAG’s 10th Vice-Chancellor, while raising funds to support university departments.
