A coalition involving the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) backed by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has agreed to present a single presidential candidate for Nigeria’s 2027 general election.
The agreement was announced by factional PDP National Chairman Tanimu Turaki during the National Opposition Summit held in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. Turaki said the move represents a strategic effort by opposition blocs to consolidate ahead of the next election cycle.
Leaders within the coalition also used the gathering to intensify calls for the resignation of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan, alleging that he is unfit to oversee the 2027 polls due to what they described as partisan leanings toward the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The opposition figures argued that Amupitan’s continued stay in office could undermine public confidence in the electoral process, though no evidence was presented publicly to substantiate the claims.
There has been no immediate response from INEC or the electoral chairman regarding the allegations.
