Ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial election in Nasarawa State, the North-Central All Progressives Congress (APC) Forum has endorsed a former Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, as its preferred candidate to succeed the incumbent Governor, Abdullahi Sule.

The Forum’s Chairman, Alhaji Saleh Zazzaga, announced the endorsement while addressing journalists at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. He stated that the decision was the culmination of extensive consultations with APC stakeholders across the geopolitical zone.

“In line with our mandate to work for the progress and development of the North-Central, APC stakeholders in the zone, under the umbrella of the North-Central APC Forum, have endorsed former Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, for the 2027 governorship election in Nasarawa State,” Zazzaga said.

He explained that the Forum believes Adamu possesses the requisite experience and capacity to build on the current administration’s achievements. “We arrived at this endorsement after extensive consultations with APC leaders and stakeholders in Nasarawa State and the North-Central at large. From our consultations, we believe Mohammed Adamu is the right person to continue the good works of the current Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule.”

Zazzaga highlighted Adamu’s distinguished career in law enforcement, both domestically and internationally, as a critical asset, particularly given the security challenges facing the region. He served as Nigeria’s 20th Inspector-General of Police from January 2019 to April 2021 and also held significant roles with the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL).

“Having Mohammed Adamu as governor of Nasarawa State will not only guarantee the development of the state, it will also ensure the security of lives and property in not only Nasarawa but the entire North-Central, due to his experience at the top levels of international and national security apparatus,” Zazzaga stated.

He further elaborated on Adamu’s track record, asserting that his leadership would translate into tangible results for the state. “He will replicate what he did at INTERPOL for more than 10 years, and as Nigeria’s IGP, to ensure peace and security in Nasarawa State and the North-Central… During Mohammed Adamu’s tenure as IGP, the menace of banditry was reduced to the barest minimum and the Kaduna-Abuja expressway was cleared of bandits. He is also a proven administrator, which is very important in discharging the mandate of a governor.”

According to the Forum chairman, the endorsement is bolstered by significant grassroots support for Adamu within Nasarawa State. He noted that various groups and prominent individuals have been calling on the former IGP to enter the race.

Zazzaga listed some of these supporters, including the Dangaladiman Lafia, Alhaji Dahiru Abdullahi Othman; APC youth groups under the aegis of Progressive Youths for a Greater Nasarawa; the Raba Gardama Group led by Alhaji Mai Koli and Hon. Musa Ali (Dan Sarari Keffi); the Nasarawa Tricycle Riders’ Association; and various stakeholders from Lafia.

The North-Central APC Forum formally called on its members and the newly elected party executives in Nasarawa State to rally behind Adamu’s ambition.

“Mohammed Adamu served at various commands of the Nigeria Police Force and rose to the pinnacle of his profession, becoming the Inspector General of Police. Apart from serving the nation meritoriously, he also took part in international assignments across the globe where he not only proved his worth and mettle but made Nigeria and indeed Africa proud,” Zazzaga added.

The statement concluded with a directive to its supporters: “We are directing all our supporters in Nasarawa State, under the leadership of our coordinator, Hon. Nasir Babanle, to go all out and support former IGP Adamu’s governorship ambition. We are also urging the newly elected APC executives in Nasarawa State at the ward, local government, and state levels to support Mohammed Adamu’s governorship bid.”
