The African Democratic Congress (ADC) yesterday condemned the federal government over what it described as the under‑funding of the Nigerian military, saying the shortfall has weakened the country’s ability to tackle rising insecurity.

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said only about seven per cent of the N336.76 billion approved for security equipment in 2025 was released — roughly N16.71 billion — and that no funds were provided for key logistics such as transport, aircraft fuel and military barracks.

“At a time when the country faces unprecedented security challenges, it is outrageous that resources are concentrated on the maintenance of the presidential fleet while military aircraft languish due to lack of funds,” the statement said, describing such priorities as “unpardonable.”

ADC linked the shortfalls to worsening insecurity, saying insurgents and terrorists have grown bolder. The party pointed to the abduction of more than 400 women and children in Ngoshe, Borno State, where Boko Haram reportedly issued a N5 billion ransom demand and a 72‑hour ultimatum. It added that insurgent groups demanded over N12 billion in ransom in April 2026 alone.

“When only a fraction of security funds is released and nothing is provided for logistics like mobility and fuel, the result is a weakened security system,” the party said. “When the state looks weak, those who threaten it grow stronger.”
