The race for the Kogi East Senatorial District took a fresh turn on Monday as a prominent contender, Alhaji Hussein Idris Kashim (Idris HK), defected to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
Idris HK, a well-known real estate developer and entertainment industry heavyweight, has already obtained the party’s nomination forms, signaling a definitive end to his brief stint with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The billionaire businessman’s quest for the Red Chamber has been marked by a series of strategic realignments. He originally began his 2027 consultations under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) before moving to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and later the PDP.
Political analysts in Kogi State suggest that Idris HK’s move to the SDP is a calculated attempt to capitalize on the party’s growing influence in the state following its strong performance in the last gubernatorial election.
Speaking with journalists after picking up the forms, Idris HK expressed confidence in his new party, stating that his primary focus remains the economic revitalization and youth empowerment of the Kogi East district.
