Nigeria’s political landscape has been jolted by a high-profile defection as activist-turned-politician Aisha Yesufu announced her exit from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and her move to the National Democratic Coalition (NDC), alongside a declaration to contest a Senate seat in 2027.
Yesufu also confirmed her intention to run for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) senatorial seat, setting the stage for what is expected to be a fiercely contested race.
Her entry reshapes an already crowded field, where political alliances and heavyweight endorsements are expected to play a decisive role.
Among the likely contenders is incumbent Senator Ireti Kingibe of the ADC, whose continued presence in the race remains uncertain amid speculation about possible party realignments.
Also expected in the contest is former Senator Philip Aduda of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who is reportedly backed by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
Yesufu’s candidacy is said to enjoy the backing of opposition figure Peter Obi, further intensifying the political stakes in the capital territory.
Analysts say the evolving lineup underscores early jockeying ahead of 2027, with the FCT Senate seat emerging as a key battleground for competing political blocs.
