Nigeria’s political debate over party loyalty has intensified after comments by actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo, following the recent defection of former presidential candidate Peter Obi.
Obi, who has moved through multiple political platforms in recent months, is said to have joined the National Democratic Coalition (NDC), a shift that has drawn mixed reactions from political observers and supporters alike.
Reacting to the development, Okonkwo downplayed the significance of the move, arguing that frequent party changes do not necessarily reflect on a politician’s competence or credibility.
“Peter Obi has changed party three times within six months. Since he moved to the NDC, I have not taken it seriously. Changing party does not question anyone’s capacity. The African Democratic Congress (ADC) cannot possibly be missing anything because he left,” he said.
The remarks highlight ongoing tensions in Nigeria’s opposition politics, where shifting alliances and defections continue to shape public perception ahead of future elections.
Analysts say the episode reflects broader uncertainty within opposition ranks, as political figures reposition themselves in an increasingly fluid and competitive landscape.
