The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Abuja has fixed a 10-day timeline to conclude the high-profile trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, over matters arising from the controversial naira redesign policy.

At the resumed hearing on Wednesday, the presiding judge announced an accelerated schedule for the proceedings, signalling the court’s determination to bring the long-running case to a close without further delays. The decision followed submissions by both the prosecution and defence on the need for a speedy and focused trial.

Emefiele is facing charges linked to the implementation and management of the naira redesign policy introduced during his tenure as CBN governor. The policy, which led to the replacement of high-denomination naira notes, sparked widespread debate and economic disruption at the time, drawing scrutiny from both the public and policymakers.

During the session, the prosecution indicated readiness to present its remaining witnesses and documentary evidence within the timeframe set by the court. Defence counsel also assured the court of cooperation, stating that the former CBN chief is prepared to clear his name and challenge the allegations against him.

Legal analysts say the court’s firm timeline reflects growing judicial emphasis on efficient case management, particularly in matters of significant public interest. Observers note that the outcome of the trial could have implications for public sector accountability and future monetary policy decisions.

The case has been adjourned to continue on consecutive dates as part of the 10-day trial window.
