Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has said that only fasting and prayers can save Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara from the deepening political crisis in the oil-rich state.
Fayose made the remark while reacting to the prolonged power struggle between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now Nigeria’s Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, a rift that has continued to polarise the state’s political landscape.
According to Fayose, the crisis has gone beyond conventional political manoeuvring and requires spiritual intervention.
“Only fasting and prayers can save Governor Fubara,” the former governor said, warning that the situation in Rivers has assumed a dangerous dimension with far-reaching consequences for governance and stability in the state.
Rivers State has been embroiled in months of political tension marked by divisions within the State House of Assembly, parallel claims to legislative authority and repeated interventions by national political actors. The crisis has raised concerns over the smooth running of government and the potential impact on development and security.
Fayose, a vocal member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), cautioned against further escalation, urging political leaders to prioritise peace and the welfare of the people over personal or factional interests.
Neither the Rivers State Government nor Governor Fubara has officially responded to Fayose’s comments.
The standoff in Rivers remains one of Nigeria’s most closely watched political crises, with analysts warning that failure to resolve it could have wider implications for democratic governance in the country.
