Nigeria’s Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has sparked fresh political debate after claiming he spent ₦50bn to help deliver President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s victory in the 2023 presidential election, warning that he will not allow himself to be sidelined as political alignments shift ahead of 2027.
Speaking at a recent gathering, Wike criticised those he believes are attempting to diminish his political relevance despite what he described as his significant contribution to Tinubu’s rise to power.
“I spent ₦50 billion to make Tinubu the president he is today,” Wike said. “I won’t be dumped just like that. Play with me and risk 2027.”
His remarks come amid renewed tensions within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and between factions that supported President Tinubu during the election cycle. While Wike did not provide details on how the alleged funds were spent, his statement has already triggered reactions across political circles, with analysts saying it highlights deepening jockeying as political blocs begin positioning themselves ahead of the next general election.
Wike insisted that he remains a key powerbroker and warned that any attempt to marginalise him would come with consequences for the ruling establishment.
Although neither the Presidency nor the APC has officially responded to his claims, Wike’s comments are expected to dominate political discussions in the coming days, reflecting the growing intensity around Nigeria’s 2027 political landscape.
