Nigeria’s Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced that the FCT Administration will mark Abuja’s 50th anniversary as part of activities lined up for President Bola Tinubu’s third year in office.
Wike disclosed the plan on Wednesday, saying the golden jubilee celebrations would be integrated into the presidential anniversary programme to showcase key achievements and ongoing infrastructure projects across the capital.
According to the minister, the move is aimed at highlighting Abuja’s development journey since its establishment in 1976, while also reflecting the Tinubu administration’s commitment to accelerating urban renewal, road construction and public service delivery in the territory.
He said residents and visitors should expect a series of events, including project inaugurations and commemorative activities, designed to celebrate the FCT’s growth and reinforce the government’s vision for a modern, well-planned capital city.
The Federal Capital Territory officially turns 50 in 2026, marking five decades since Abuja was designated Nigeria’s capital, replacing Lagos. The Tinubu administration’s third anniversary falls in May, a milestone the government says will be used to present its performance scorecard to Nigerians.
Wike added that further details of the celebrations would be released in the coming weeks.
