Super Eagles forward Victor Boniface made his debut for Werder Bremen on Sunday evening as a substitute in their impressive 4-0 victory over Borussia Monchengladbach, despite expectations he would start the game.

The 24-year-old came on in the 75th minute, replacing Romano Schmid, and quickly made his mark by providing an assist for Justin Njinmah’s late goal at Borussia Park.

Boniface’s substitute role puzzled many, especially after consistent training during the international break and injuries sidelining other key players. German media outlet Bild explained that his introduction from the bench was a precautionary decision by the coaching staff.

Having struggled with injuries last season, Bremen’s management is keen to reintegrate Boniface gradually to prevent setbacks. His fitness remains a concern, which influenced the decision to ease him into first-team action.

Following his bright cameo, Boniface is expected to earn a starting spot in Werder Bremen’s next fixture against SC Freiburg at the Weserstadion. He is likely to replace Austria’s Marco Grüll, who has yet to open his account this season.

Werder Bremen coach Horst Steffen expressed confidence in Boniface’s abilities, stating, “Victor is physically very strong, a very good finisher, and quick. He excelled during Bayer Leverkusen’s championship season, both as a goalscorer and playmaker. We are hopeful that he will be an important factor for our team this term.”
