A senior figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has publicly challenged the policy credentials of Peter Obi, raising doubts about the former presidential candidate’s engagement with party ideology and governance plans.

Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC’s national publicity secretary, criticised Obi’s oft-repeated claim that he is “not desperate to be president” but focused on rescuing Nigeria, arguing that such ambition must be grounded in concrete policy positions.

“That has to be built on something,” Abdullahi said, noting that the party had convened a manifesto committee that worked for months to develop its policy framework.

He questioned Obi’s familiarity with the party’s positions on key national issues, including fuel subsidy and security. “You may invite him and ask: what is the ADC position on fuel subsidy? What is the party’s framework on security? He doesn’t know, because he has never been interested,” Abdullahi said.

The spokesman further alleged that some political actors were more focused on securing party tickets than articulating clear policy alternatives. “If you say you want to contest an election, and you believe in changing the country, you should know what your party stands for,” he added.

The remarks highlight growing tensions within Nigeria’s opposition landscape, as debates intensify over ideology, leadership and preparedness ahead of future electoral contests.
