Abia State has been selected by the World Bank for a major water infrastructure project valued at $700m, in a move expected to significantly expand access to clean water and strengthen public utilities.

The project, one of the largest of its kind in the state, is aimed at improving water supply systems, upgrading distribution networks and addressing long-standing challenges in urban and rural access to potable water.

While full implementation details are yet to be made public, officials say the initiative will focus on sustainable water management, efficiency and service delivery, aligning with broader development goals in Nigeria’s water sector.

Analysts say the investment could have far-reaching economic and public health benefits, particularly in communities where access to safe drinking water remains limited.

The development marks a significant milestone for Abia, positioning it among key beneficiaries of international funding aimed at strengthening critical infrastructure across Nigeria.
