Professor Pat Utomi has issued a firm warning that he will withdraw his support for Peter Obi if the former Anambra State governor accepts a vice-presidential role instead of seeking the presidency in the 2027 elections.

Speaking during a political forum on Tuesday, Utomi said Nigeria’s current challenges require “a leadership reset”, insisting Obi represents a credible alternative with the competence and moral standing to lead the country.

According to Utomi, allowing Obi to settle for a subordinate role would undermine the broader movement pushing for governance reforms and accountability. He argued that many Nigerians view Obi as a leading figure capable of mobilising national support.

“Peter Obi must contest for president. Anything short of that exposes the struggle to compromise,” Utomi said, stressing that he would have “no business” supporting a political arrangement that sidelines Obi.

The remarks have sparked renewed debate within opposition circles, where conversations about possible alliances, mergers and running-mate negotiations have been ongoing.

Obi, who was the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has not publicly responded to Utomi’s comments and has yet to announce his official political plans for 2027.

Political analysts say Utomi’s statement reflects rising tensions over coalition talks ahead of the next election cycle, with several opposition figures attempting to build a united front against the ruling party.

More reactions are expected as discussions about power-sharing and candidacy continue across Nigeria’s political landscape.
