Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru has announced the acquisition of three aircraft as part of an ambitious plan to boost air transport, expand business opportunities, and position the state as a rising investment hub in southeastern Nigeria.

Speaking on Tuesday, the governor said the aircraft purchase forms a key component of his administration’s strategy to open the state to both local and international investors, improve connectivity, and accelerate economic growth.

Nwifuru explained that the aircraft will support the state’s emerging aviation infrastructure, including the new Chuba Okadigbo International Airport, which officials say is designed to handle increasing passenger and cargo traffic.

“Our vision is to make Ebonyi a major destination for commerce, tourism, and investment,” the governor said. “These aircraft will not only enhance mobility for our people but also demonstrate our readiness to compete economically on a larger scale.”

The initiative has been described by state officials as a long-term investment aimed at stimulating job creation, improving logistics, and supporting key sectors such as agriculture and mining.

Reactions to the announcement have been mixed. Supporters say the move reflects bold leadership and strategic foresight, while critics argue the government must ensure transparency, financial sustainability, and clear planning for the aircraft’s operational management.

Governor Nwifuru maintained that the state is fully committed to accountability and that the aviation project will be implemented in phases to guarantee long-term viability.

Ebonyi State, one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing subnational economies, has in recent years intensified efforts to strengthen infrastructure and attract both domestic and foreign capital. The new aircraft acquisition marks one of its most high-profile steps yet in that direction.
